User research with slashwhy

Understand your users' needs and lay the groundwork for informed decisions in UX and UI design.

The key information about user research

  • Through user research, we place real user groups and their interactions with software applications under real-world conditions at the center of the design process. In this way, we replace gut feelings with reliable insights that serve as the foundation for concept development and design.

  • The users of your software face a wide variety of challenges every day. To identify these challenges and understand the underlying pain points, usage contexts, and behaviors, our designers and researchers rely on established user research methods.

  • In our methodological investigations, we combine qualitative and quantitative methods. Interviews, observations, surveys, field studies, and structured analyses provide highly meaningful data. They reveal how users interact with applications, what problems arise in the process, and which requirements are truly relevant in everyday life.

  • User research marks the beginning of our holistic UX and development process. This allows us to gain a precise understanding of the problem space before developing concrete software solutions. User research thus forms the foundation for well-founded conceptualization, UX and UI design, and digitally products that succeed in the long term.

  • As a user research service provider, we handle the structured planning and execution of user research for companies. We select appropriate methods, involve relevant users, and systematically evaluate the results.

Your advantages

How we use user research to improve your product quality

Digital products are developed for people, not for assumptions. This is exactly where user research comes in: We systematically study real users, their needs, their behavior, and their usage context. This is because the actual requirements of user groups often differ significantly from initial project hypotheses.

Instead of relying on an internal perspective, we can consistently align product development with the real needs of users through user research. For your product, this means greater acceptance, better user experiences, and more efficient workflows in users’ daily lives. For your company, this results in a solid foundation for decision-making, a clearly guided development process, and higher quality in the implementation of digital applications.

FAQ | Frequently asked questions about user research

  • User research provides a solid foundation for product decisions. Instead of relying on assumptions or internal opinions, it examines the needs, behaviors, and usage contexts of real users. This reduces the risk of misguided development and ensures that time and budget are allocated effectively.

  • In theory, you can develop software without conducting structured user research. However, this increases the risk of developing a product that doesn’t meet the actual needs of your target audience. User research helps reduce this uncertainty and makes decision-making transparent.

  • Internal assumptions and experience are valuable, but they are no substitute for systematic research. A key principle in UX design is: You are not your user. User research provides an objective perspective on needs, behavior, and usage scenarios. Especially in familiar markets, misconceptions can arise that can be uncovered through user research.

  • The scope of user research can be flexibly adapted to the project’s size and objectives. Even a small number of interviews or targeted observations can yield valuable insights. What matters is not the quantity, but the quality and relevance of the data collected.

  • Recruitment depends heavily on the target audience. For specialized user groups, such as those in industrial or medical settings, it may require more effort. In such cases, we work with existing contacts or specialized partners to identify and engage suitable participants.

Our approach

Which methods we apply in user research

There is no one-size-fits-all solution in user research. The most appropriate methods depend on the objective, research question, target audience, and project phase. We carefully select and combine qualitative and quantitative research methods, plan the implementation, and ensure that the data and insights we gather are reliable and directly incorporated into the concept, UX design, and product development.

In-depth interviews

Through qualitative interviews, we gain a deep understanding of your users’ needs, challenges, and decision making processes. We develop interview guides, recruit suitable user groups, and conduct the interviews in a structured way. This gives us reliable insights into what users truly need, beyond what they explicitly express.

Field studies

Through observations in real world usage contexts, also known as user shadowing, we analyze behavior, workflows, and interactions under authentic conditions. We accompany the users of your products in their everyday environment, identify real challenges, and uncover insights into usage scenarios that often remain hidden in traditional surveys.

Surveys

Quantitative methods such as surveys or structured interviews help us validate hypotheses and scale insights. We design the survey, analyze the data, and establish a solid foundation for setting priorities and making data-driven decisions throughout the project.

Secondary analysis

Existing data sources such as analytics, usage data, or existing user feedback provide valuable insights into actual behavior. We systematically analyze this data, identify patterns, and cross-reference it with qualitative findings to gain a comprehensive understanding of usage.

Validating research

When concepts, prototypes, or initial solutions are already in place, we use targeted research methods to test assumptions. We analyze whether users understand the application, achieve their goals, and identify where adjustments are needed before further resources are allocated to implementation. At this stage, it’s worth taking a look at our approach to UX testing.

Our way of working

The user research process

At slashwhy, the user research process is generally divided into four clearly defined phases. Since every project has its own specific research goals and constraints, these phases can be adapted to the specific circumstances. This approach allows us to establish the necessary foundation for all further considerations in UX design.

Step 1 | Formulate a research objective and establish the context

At the beginning, we collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to define the objectives of the study. Which users are in focus? What questions should be explored? We analyze usage scenarios, contextual factors, and the project’s strategic goals. This establishes a clear yet open-ended focus for the subsequent research and precisely formulated guiding questions.

Step 2 | Select, plan, and implement methods

Based on the research objectives, we select appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods. Interviews, observations, surveys, and field studies are planned and structured along the user journey. Ideally, these activities should be conducted on-site in the real-world context of use, but they can also be carried out remotely. We systematically record work processes, behaviors, statements, and interactions, and document all data in a transparent manner.

Step 3 | Analyze data and gain insights

After completing an initial research cycle, we analyze the collected data, identify key user needs and pain points, and present these for discussion with the stakeholders. To do this, we use tools such as user journeys, scenarios, and the aforementioned needs and pain points. With this clearly defined problem area, we can then move on to the final step.

Step 4 | Application in UX design and organization

The insights we gain are directly incorporated into strategic product decisions, concept development, and UX design. Through workshops and debriefings, we foster a shared understanding among product teams, stakeholders, and management. Upon request, we assist in setting up a research repository to ensure that knowledge remains available within the company over the long term and benefits future projects.

What happens after the four phases are completed?

The four phases described above can be summarized as the “discovery phase.” In this phase of the UX design process, we develop a deep understanding of users, their needs, and the context of use as the foundation for conceptualization and UX design.

This is followed by the concrete development of the solution in the design phase. Depending on the project, it may be useful in this phase to verify further assumptions through usability testing or user research and to refine the solution iteratively before it is implemented.

Only once the key questions have been clarified and the design has been sufficiently validated do we move on to software development. As the application matures, new insights emerge that can be re-examined through discovery-based methods. This creates an iterative process of research, conceptualization, validation, and further development, in which our understanding of users and requirements is continuously refined.

Possible outcomes and deliverables

  • We compile all the insights from interviews, observations, and surveys and organize your users’ key needs, problems, and requirements. You’ll receive a clear, comprehensive foundation for all subsequent steps in the project.

  • We develop personas and specific usage scenarios that represent typical user groups and their goals. These models help you consistently prioritize requirements, features, and decisions from the user’s perspective.

  • We visualize how users interact with your application and in what contexts they use it. Customer journeys make processes, touchpoints, and usage scenarios transparent.

  • We consolidate all data into clearly prioritized insights and translate these into specific requirements for product, UX design, and development. These form the basis for further conceptualization and implementation.

  • All results are documented in a structured manner and, upon request, made available in the form of reports, readouts, or research repositories. This ensures that the knowledge gained remains available within your company for the long term.
