Combining sustainability & economy

Focused on the vision of making the German real estate landscape climate-neutral through needs-based, innovative energy applications, white energy specializes in solutions for sustainable energy generation and use in buildings. A key objective is to combine sustainability and economic efficiency. This gave rise to the idea for a modular energy management system that bundles all energy flows, monitors all consumption data in real time and enables granular control of all systems to optimize energy use: weEMS. With expertise in monitoring, controlling energy flows and displaying CO₂ values as well as ensuring sustainability standards, white energy paves the way for property owners and managers to develop climate-friendly and efficient energy concepts.

One module, many winners

Within its energy management platform weEMS, white energy saw great potential for the planned weMieterstrom module, in which landlords sell locally generated PV electricity directly to their tenants. The tenants receive cheap, green electricity, while the photovoltaic systems pay for themselves in just a few years for the landlords – as opposed to the usual 10-15 years. Instead of receiving an average feed-in tariff of less than 8 cents/kWh, they can resell the electricity at significantly better prices. Falling feed-in tariffs and rising energy costs make the model even more attractive for both sides - a win-win situation for landlords and tenants that also helps to protect the climate.

Rapid sprints to a market-ready solution

To implement its energy management platform, white energy commissioned slashwhy as an experienced development partner. weEMS was to be based on the open source solution OpenEMS with its own web portal, database and cloud as well as a locally installed gateway. The product vision was sharpened in an initial workshop before a prototype of the basic weMonitoring module was created, which was tested in close cooperation with potential users and then developed into a series product. Within a few months, the weMieterstrom module followed, which quickly reached market maturity thanks to early user feedback and consistently user-centered development. With the help of a Scrum Master and a slashwhy PO to support the Product Owner at white energy, slashwhy gradually introduced Scrum and established an agile process with high development speed and quality.

Digital added value for all user groups

weEMS combines all energy flows - from electricity to water, gas and heat - in a central platform and provides various live views and filter options. This allows comprehensive key figures and consumption values to be recorded granularly and in real time, with sophisticated rights and role management taking into account the different needs of tenants, landlords and managers. While tenants receive completely transparent insights into their individual consumption data, landlords benefit from consolidated reports on generation and consumption as well as the option to generate billing, including SEPA direct debit, from within the application. In this way, weEMS combines transparency, data protection, regulatory requirements and user-friendly operability.

The future of energy management

The topic of energy management also holds enormous potential for the future beyond the existing modules: for example, white energy is planning to integrate dynamic electricity tariffs and forecasting models for weather, consumption and prices with slashwhy as a long-term development partner in order to control the charging of e-cars or the operation of heat pumps even more efficiently. In addition, reporting is to be expanded with regard to ESG requirements so that relevant data can be transmitted to external bodies such as certifiers. In this way, white energy aims to create further added value for weEMS users and at the same time pave the way for even more sustainable and economical energy concepts.

Achievements & Outcome

In the retros, but also in our dailies, I always sense that everyone in the team is keen on the topic of energy management and that there is a high level of identification with our product, our company and our values.”

As a stakeholder, I have absolute transparency about the project status at all times. This starts with the reviews, continues with the prioritization of the user stories and is particularly evident in the very prompt documentation and billing of the sprints.”

During the course of the project, we realized how important a well thought-out UX/UI concept is in order to define a consistent structure and clean user stories. After all, many different user groups with different requirements work with the system. This entails a certain degree of complexity.”

We didn't have a classic requirements and functional specification, just a product idea. slashwhy was prepared to go down this path with us and accompanied us step by step through the development process in an agile and user-centered manner. This enabled us to achieve a market-ready product much faster.”

We work in tight two-week sprints. We get feedback quickly, can react flexibly and see actual results after each sprint - that is hugely motivating. As a result, we are not only fast, but also extremely goal-oriented.”
